MARCH MADNESS, THE SQUEAKQUEL: In an apparent effort to democratize its Sexiest Woman Alive franchise, Esquire is running its own bracket of races, with four "divisions" (music and fashion, television, sports, and movies)-- a few matchups of note:
  • Alessandria Ambrosio (2 seed) v. Miranda Kerr (15 seed)--A legit shot for a 15/2 upset there, I think.
  • Blake Lively (1 seed) v. Heidi Klum (16 seed)--Lively has a tough road for a top seed, given how tough the "region" is, potentially having to beat out 8 seed Minka Kelly, and 4 seed Christina Hendricks as well as Klum just to make it to the Elite 8.
  • Christina Hendricks (4 seed) v. January Jones (13 seed)
  • Anne Hathaway (8 seed) v. Rachel McAdams (9 seed)--these two have a tough first round matchup, but then face the winner of Megan Fox/Helen Mirren, which could lead to a #1 being bounced early.
  • The other two top seeds are Beyonce and Natalie Gulbis.
This seems worthy of serious bracketology analysis.

  1. OK, Heidi Montag vs. Heidi Montag is just too funny.

Also worthy of note is that Lane Kiffin got the 16 seed in the Sports bracket.  It's entirely possible wiseguy college football fans could take him a long way.

  3. If Julie Bowen can't make the cut in a division where Emmanuelle Chriqui is the 2 seed, I question the methodology.

Also, Sienna Miller as a 15-seed is insane.

Hathaway seems at a distinct disadvantage with her head-shot being Bambi.

  6. I prefer the Go Fug Yourself Fug Madness tournament. Quite a bit of overlap between sexiest and worst dressing women it seems when comparing the Fug and Esquire brackets.

What other Mad March Brackets should there be?

I think an annual EarWorm Tournament would be interesting. Must be other concepts, or groupings of people that could be broken into brackets and contested.

    Suggestions?

I have George Clooney and Matt Damon as 1- seed. Most of the Handsome Club are in there- well, except Kimmel. Colin Firth is not a surprise as a 2nd seed but I would put him higher. Same with Jon Stewart and Benjamin Bratt.

    Oh, wrong thread?

I think there's nothing I can say here that wouldn't sound lecherous or neanderthal.  Tried it a couple of ways, and nope.  So, like the other bracket, looks like I'm sitting this one out.  Except:  GO HUSKIES/ALESSANDRA AMBROSIO.

  10. How about brackets for celebrity chefs?  We won't seed Bourdain - he can be the selection committee.

Recall that this is really "sexiest woman alive who's willing to pose semi-nude for us or who has semi-nude photos we can buy/use."  Aside from her brief thing on MF, Bowen has stayed away from the cheesecake.

I'll just note that I'm enjoying seeing Rihanna down in the polls to someone I've never even heard of (but Heidi Klum is losing to someone from Gossip Girl?  C'mon).  Also, Real Heidi is beating Plastic Heidi.

  15. So I understand I am not the intended market for this, but I wanted to go vote for Christina Hendricks because I love her. Browsing the other rankings and I was shocked by Oliva Wilde (14) vs Ginnifer Goodwin (3). All the men I know would certainly reverse those rankings. Am I wrong, men?

No, I thought Goodwin as the higher seed was completely correct.

  17. I'd have a #1 seed out first round (Beyonce).  No question Beyonce is better looking in a classical sense; I just happen to have a weird thing for Avril and always have.
