AMERICA VOTED: And we'll want to talk.

Big Mike, Andrew Garcia, Aaron Kelly in the bottom three; Big Mike eliminated and saved.

Correctly.

Yes, the judges only have one save per season, and no, I don't think that Mike's going to go farther than final 4-5. But he's certainly good enough to keep around and forgive one mistake, and, yes, it'd be awful to eliminate the last African American in the competition this soon. He's also someone charismatic, talented and creative enough to rebound with the fanbase after this one bad week, someone smart enough that with his back against the wall, it was time to trot out "This Woman's Work" again.

I'll tell you who should feel worried tonight: Siobhan Magnus, because she's the potential Final Two entrant who's been shakiest thus far, and there just went her margin of error. Next week is going to be tense as hell -- 22% of the field is going home, something you ordinarily wouldn't get until the Final Four. Wow.

[Also, Young David Archuleta and his Dead, Dead Eyes still suck.]

  1. Okay, I am not one for reality competition induced crying, but I bawled during that performance. Also, fwiw, his Eleanor Rigby was one of my favorites last night. America, I'm not feeling you dawgs. For you, for me, for you, that was not cool.

If we have to have a judges' save, I'm glad they used it this week. Last year it was totally a "if we don't use it this week, we don't ever get to use it so what the heck" save. I doubt the producers want to lose any more women, so the judges might have felt some pressure to save the save, as it were, for one of them. But this seemed like a legit reason to use it - one not-terrible performance from someone who, for many reasons that Adam gave, would be good to keep around. And at least now we can be done with it the rest of the way.

Pretty much a no-brainer on the Judges' Save. We'll see if we feel so warm about the decision next week when the American People vote out Katie and Siobhan, but for now? Right choice... -Daniel

  4. Do we have a theme for next week yet?

  5. I assume that between Glambert mentoring (least qualified mentor ever?  I mean, he can sing better than Miley Cyrus, of course, but I believe that he's the first mentor not to be a longtime musical legend or else have multiple platinum selling albums or the ever popular both) and Glee premiering that we're going to see a musicals theme of some sort.  Just a guess.

No brainer to save Big Mike.  He's one of the few who is at least interesting on a regular basis.  I wasn't crazy about his Eleanor Rigby, but he should not have been on the bottom of the rungs this week.

  6. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I wouldn't have used the judges' save. While Siobhan's my favorite contestant, objectively speaking, Crystal has lapped the field over the course of the season and I would have kept the judges' save in my back pocket just in case it ever needed to be used on Crystal.

  7. I assume the judges know what her vote totals have been, and believe that she's in no risk of slipping.

I just wanna say: I semi-called it, even if it was in a vague/non-commital way.

  9. More math: the earlier that Idol Immunity is granted, the less likely it is to inadvertantly eliminate someone good the following week.  Easier to avoiding being in the bottom two in a round of nine than had they waited until the final six and had a 33% Must Go week.

  10. Oh David Archuleta and his dead, dead eyes. He's still creepy!

I barely even watch the results shows anymore. I DVR the show, watch the opening number if it's the Idol contestants singing, and then flip to another channel during the guest performances (except David Cook and Kris Allen from a few weeks ago). I just flip back for results and rewind if I missed anything important. Archie and his dead, dead eyes seemed to sing forever. The girl on 16 & Pregnant managed to deliver twins and break up with her boyfriend in the time it took him to sing Imagine.

Re: Big Mike and the save - I don't mind that they saved him so long as it doesn't put Lee or The Outlaw Casey James at risk. Do the judges know the vote totals for all contestants? (And do they know the results before they're announced live?) I thought Big Mike's Eleanor Rigby was awful, but overall he's still better than Tim, Aaron, and Andrew.

Is anyone else concerned that Tim might actually survive to the final three or four?

  11. I thought Archie had some nice phrasing there but, damn, his LOUD inhale before every line drives me insane.  I am no singing expert but I would think that problem could, and should, have been trained out of him by this point.

Glad Big Mike got saved.  I don't get Lee, feel like I am missing something every one else is seeing.

    My wish....
Can go anytime: Tim, Aaron, Lee, Katie, Andrew
Final 4:  Casey, Crystal, Siobhan, Mike

  12. The boyfriend was shocked to hear that Big Mike had been voting out, glad to hear that he'd been saved, but then dumbfounded to hear that two people go home next week.  He has announced that we need to vote next week.  To which I say:  Well played, American Idol.  Well played.

  13. For next week's special 88 minute episode followed by the return of GLEE.

I think Crystal is a lock for the final five, and that any combination of Big Mike, Lee, Siobhan, Casey, and Andrew joining her would be fine with me. But I am concerned that the apparent infatuations with Tim and Aaron are going to mean someone who deserves to be in Tier 1 winds up getting voted out in Tier 2.

  15. Suppose next week is Acoustic Covers Of Girl Pop Hits Week.  Now who's going home?

  16. There is a rumor that the mentoring for next week occurs in Vegas.  Extrapolating from that, The Wrap is guessing Elvis, i.e., the theme that got Daughtry knocked off.

I'm guessing that "Flamboyantly Gay Singers" is probably not an acceptable Idol them. Although I think it would make for a hell of a show.

Well now the save makes even more sense, huh...

Full disclosure: I didn't vote this week, so I can't complain. My beef is that the competition is now more about gratifying those who do vote, i.e. teen girls and grammas. Siobhan is no where close to getting the boot, because most little girls see a little of themselves in her. Aaron, Tim and Casey get free rides. Crystal can still win because she also appeals to the older voters.

Don't be surprised if the next four voted off (in no particuler order) Mike, Andrew, Lee, Katie.
