I went to college with a kid named Johns Hopkins (Mr. Cosmo will remember him from the St. Louis water polo days). Direct descendant of the original, but (of course) many generations removed. Extremely nice guy. I suspect he would be both sad and relieved to know that he could drop the "s."
Incidentally, he is one of those people who it is impossible to Google.
Fun fact: both University officials quoted in that piece had the S's dropped from their last names. Also, for most of the day the frontpage of the school's website looked like this: http://webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/featured/naming_announcement_april01/final.jpg
That place makes me proud sometimes.
And Isaac, you might want to call your classmate, as the namesake had no children.
