NO, THEY WILL NOT BE FIGHTING BAD HORSE: Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Joss Whedon will direct (but not write) The Avengers. An interesting choice to be sure--Whedon knows how to balance an ensemble cast in a film, and Serenity sure looked like it cost more than the $39M it apparently did. That said, even his most successful ventures haven't been broadly popular, and while he's worked with emerging stars before, he's never worked with the level of star power he'll be working with here--Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey, Jr. are both expected to return.

So this is the Vision-Scarlet Witch-Wasp-Ant Man-Hawkeye-Black Falcon-Thor-Captain America Avengers, not the Emma Peel-John Steed Avengers?  Looking forward to seeing the casting of the Scarlet Witch.  Then again, despite the 80 or so issues in an acid-free cardboard box in my basement, I'm not likely to see this.

Man, is this exciting.  As long as Fox doesn't touch it... Nope, they don't.  I'm happy!

We should do a members speculation thread.  Who do we consider the most relevant Avengers?  Cap is obvious, as is Iron Man, who provides pretty much the money -- Thor is essential -- how much of a pain has Hulk been on this team?

The Vision's backstory would have to pretty much be completely rewritten to avoid a conversation about the original Human Torch (pushing up glasses), Hawkeye is not someone I want to see, Wasp and Ant-Man would be great, but I would love for them to just have fun with it and let Henry Pym be whoever he wants whenever he wants.  I really should wiki Henry Pym, because I don't understand his phases.  I will do that after the gig.  Seriously, I just looked, and he has five different names, y'all.

    Man.  I am a DORK.

yeah, I just read that Wiki, and I don't remember much of it.  I like that everything that happens to him goes "self-esteem problems," "brainwashed by enemy," "believed to be insane," and "cuckolded by Wasp."  How could you possibly leave him out of this movie?

Cap, Thor, Iron Man, and Nick Fury are all but confirmed at this point. Go ahead and throw Black Widow in there, because they will work in Scarlett Johanssen any way they can. I think Hawkeye should be included. You definitely need another woman, though. Ms. Marvel could be acceptable here (hot blonde, decent powers). But I think they'll go with Wasp, with special guest appearances by: Henry Pym as random scientist. Hell, Kelsey Grammar can reprise his role as Beast working with Pym (Just please: No action shots with him ever again). And I'm going to throw a few random ones I want to see on the team: Luke Cage and Iron Fist. And yes, I am a nerd that still gets the Avengers comics... much to the embarassment of my wife.

  5. Variety reported that Joss would also be reworking the script, which only makes sense.  There is no way he would agree to do it without a certain amount of script control.  That being said, I have no idea how in the world he is going to make an Avengers movie work.  But, as always, I trust Joss.
