I DON'T GIVE A DAMN 'BOUT MY REPUTATION: While Kim has already rightly pointed out that we had the best Lost in some time, I thought Glee also regained its footing a bit last night, managing to incorporate most of the characters in some way rather than giving us something focusing on only one or two relationships, Brittany's brilliant discussion of the effects of cold medicine, some surprisingly nice acting from Dianna Agron (who's become the show's secret dramatic weapon), and for once, a song ("Run Joey Run") that seemed to be chosen for reasons other than the likelihood of selling singles. A few other loose thoughts:
  • How do you do an episode called "Bad Reputation" and not use the eponymous song? Either Quinn or Puck could have done it and ripped through it.
  • Admittedly, William McKinley High School exists in some sort of bizarro alternate universe, but why on earth would Kurt, Artie, Tina, and Mercedes think that performing a musical number (which was unusually poorly lip-synched by Kevin McHale in particular) in the library would generate a "scandal" which would make them popular? Pretty sure that's a one-way ticket to Loserville, population you.
  • Matthew Morrison rapping--yay or nay?

I was really hoping they were going to sing Freedy Johnston's "Bad Reputation."  I have no earthly understanding of how they would work it in, but it would have been fun for me.

  2. I have not yet watched last night's episode, but the answer to the last question is always no.  See "Bust A Move"; "Thong Song".

I think maybe the library thing was kind of to show that these kids maybe aren't uncool just because of unfair or arbitrary superficialities but also because they really are kind of clueless goody-two-shoes?

Matthew Morrison rapping is generally a big old "nay," in fact, anything that requires him to try to look cool or badass is pretty much a giant cringe-fest (though I'm willing to accept that that also may be intentional). The only time he actually had me for a second in terms of coolness was his totally stoic "I couldn't agree more" after Emma propositioned him in the Madonna episode.

However, "Ice Ice Baby" was surprisingly enjoyable, I think maybe because we didn't have to see his face too much while he was rapping. It was more about the dancing which, for someone who was 9 when both that song and "Can't Touch This" came out, was fun to see. Were you guys watching Brittany during those numbers? Holy hell that girl can dance. Here she is backing up Beyonce doing Single Ladies at the AMAs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElWylvVrGt8

  4. I fully acknowledge that Matthew Morrison rapping is a big ol' cheese fest but I always love it, for inexplicable reasons.

Oh, god, you're trying to give me an aneurism by giving us two options w/r/t Matthew Morrison and Vanilla Ice, aren't you?  I did appreciate that he said the assignment was to find maligned songs and discover the value hidden within them, and then he discovered that the value hidden within Ice Ice Baby was that WHITE PEOPLE RAPPING ARE AWESOME.

Incidentally, perhaps the reason Glee didn't do Bad Reputation was that it could only suffer by comparison to the greatest of all television shows about high school outcasts?

I also haven't yet watched last night's episode, but I thought "Golddigger" was pretty good.

I think they decided against including "Bad Reputation" simply because it was never considered a lousy song, nor was it ever overplayed.

I wanted that one too. Or at least Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation," which is less quiet and more likely for the show.

I actually liked his Golddigger and his Bust a Move.

The fact that 2 people reference Freedy Johnston's "Bad Reputation" confirms my decision to spend a lot
of time around these ALOTT5MA parts.
