WHOCARESWHODUNIT? As Adam noted a few weeks back, I have a thing for a bunch of shows that I don't blog about regularly here--Castle, NCIS, Psych, Monk, White Collar, and to a much lesser degree NCIS: LA. In overall style, they're rather different, but what they boil down to is procedurals with a twist--we really don't care whodunit in most episodes, but are watching it to spend time with the characters and enjoy the chemistry--sometimes romantic (Castle), sometimes bromantic (Psych, White Collar), and sometimes a little of both (NCIS offers the McGee/Tony bromance as well as the Tony/Ziva romance). The mysteries are frequently half-thought out, usually easily solvable by applying the Law & Order principle ("most famous guest star did it," typical on Castle and Psych) or the ever popular mystery novel resolution of introducing a new character in the final minutes who's the mastermind (NCIS's staple). Some, following in the footsteps of Columbo (or, more recently, Monk and Criminal Intent), show us who did it from the outset.

Of course, your enjoyment of these shows depends largely on how much you tolerate the show's particular quirk--Nathan Fillion being snarky, James Roday tossing out 80s pop culture references like there's no tomorrow, or Matthew Bomer pulling out Blue Steel--but I can deal with all of those. These shows aren't great (though they sometimes have really good moments--the Dana Delany two-parter on Castle was pretty riveting, and last season's Psych finale was a solid homage to Hitchcock), but they're solid brain candy--and sometimes, that's all you want. (The Good Guys is looking like it may also work in that vein, which is a particularly nice thing in the summer.)

  1. I enjoy the other shows so much that I'm now concerned I've missed out on Psych and Monk, though I have some professional baggage with Tony Shalhoub.

I also haven't jumped on board many of the USA shows because I find that while they are excellently casted, the scripts often leave me wanting. IPS and White Collar are excellent examples of this, with both casts providing enough charm to more than make up for the episodes that are thinly plotted. Burn Notice looks as though it bucks this trend, but I haven't picked it up yet.

Also, still not quite buying Tony and Ziva. Are they? Have they? Will they? Enough already. Though the idea of Rena Sofer and Gibbs made me shudder a bit, and I'm glad that's fallen apart. Why MR. Gibbs? WHY?

I have a TV confession- I find Royal Pains to be addictive. Mark Feuerstein is wonderful, and I lurve Reshma Shetty as Divya Katdare. If it's on, I can't stop watching, which is unfortunate, since USA likes to play 4 or 5 eps in a row.

  3. I love Castle.  It truly is brain candy.  And, when I saw that Dana Delany was getting a new show, I was so hoping that it was going to be her federal agent, because that two-parter was great.

  4. IPS has improved a lot this year by jettisoning the "Mary's Family/personal life" baggage, and letting McDonnell and Weller snark on each other, but isn't quite as much fun.

And I think it's pretty plain Tony and Ziva hooked up in Paris.

  5. You're not alone on this! I know its formula by heart, but it's still charming.

  6. I think you're spot-on naming "Castle" as brain-candy. There's just enough thoughtfulness to make it not such a guilty pleasure, but mostly, you show up for the snark and the flirting and the fun, not the mystery. Though I think ABC is trying to make it more than just a show -- I have to admit I'm really looking forward to the actual book version of Naked Heat coming out this fall!

I also love Castle, and love love LOVE Nathan Filion and Stana Katic (both Canadian!), but I was extremely disappointed by the book Heat Wave.  I didn't know that Naked Heat was coming out, but I'm not sure I'll read it.

My other brain candy show is The Mentalist, which I'm watching on the DVR right now while I write report cards.

  8. I've watched The Mentalist a couple of times, but like most of the CBS procedurals (particularly the CSI's and Criminal Minds) it's just so damn SERIOUS all the time.  Yes, Baker sometimes gets a chance to be a little snarky, but his backstory in so heavy that it isn't as much fun.  One of my favorite parts of Castle is the Castle/Rogers family unit (as well as how they're a sort of surrogate family to Beckett), and that's completely missing on Mentalist.

Dude.  There's another Jenn with two n's, and we both like Castle.  If you say that you think that Neko Case is f'g awesome, I'm going to start wondering if I have a twin.

I watched the pilot of "Persons Unknown" last night, mostly because it got some good reviews and because I love Alan Ruck. Anyone else watch?

I like all those other shows, and though I have watched many episodes of both Monk and Psych, they didn't stick with me.  I will watch them on a saturday afternoon if nothing else is on tv and I have already cleared out the tivo and can't decide on something to on demand on netflix, but that is pretty much when I will watch them.

Criminal Minds is sometimes so serious or oooky that I cannot sleep, but I also cannot stop watching because of my TV husband Dr. Oliver Spenser Reed (and for a while off and on my TV mother-in-law Jane Lynch)

My shows for this where I don't care about the cases but like the people: Bones, Castle, Burn Notice, Psych, White Collar, in Plain Sight, Criminal Minds, Eureka.

Could not get into Royal Pains, and quit Monk after Sharona left because Monk is insufferable without someone to call him on his crap and Natalie doesn't do it.

I love Natalie.  Maybe not as much as (mmmmmmmy) Sharona, but definitely love her.  I am Monk obsessed.  He is my second favorite crazy person on TV after Gregory House.

What's wrong with Tony Shaloub?  If it's really bad don't tell me, because I kind of love him in a totally manly way.  How about those Flyers (or insert sports team of your choice)?

I am late to the party because I hadn't finished the last episode of Castle and didn't want to be spoilered, but I lurve it too.  Also love the Mentalist, loved Monk, enjoy the odd episode of CSI and that one where Greg from Dharma & Greg gets to be all broody.

That's Criminal Minds.  Which I also love, record and watch when my husband is playing hockey.
