I'LL TAKE MY ICE CREAM IN NON-BALL-BEARING FORM: Today's weather forecast makes this the perfect day to revisit Deadspin's ranked list of the top products inside an ice cream truck. Someone send me a Jack & Jill truck, because I could really go for a creamsicle today.

  1. Inexplicably, my office blocks Deadspin, but no other Gawker Media site (Jezebel and Gawker? A-Ok!).  Perhaps more bizarrely?  The Onion, problematic.  The Onion AV Club?  Fine.

I love Candy Center Crunch (aka Chip Candy Crunch) and places that carry Good Humor bars (7-11s, baseball field concessions, etc.) don't ever carry it.  Only the trucks have it.

  3. When it comes to the ice cream truck, I'm all about the Chocolate Eclair/Toasted Almond/Strawberry Shortcake.

(Matt, perhaps management is worried that a zealous associate will mistakenly send clients a newsflash from The Onion without realizing it was true, requiring an embarrassing correction later.  ("Contrary to my earlier message, Area Man did not, in fact, Smoke, Like, Twelve Doobies.  Apologies from the firm.")

It may be an Ohio thing,  but I vote for Root Beer Float Pop - vanilla ice cream, surrounded by frozen root beer.

  5. I drove a Jack & Jill-branded ice cream truck for one summer in college.  I certainly ate my fair share of profits in the form of Chipwiches.  But on a really hot day like today, a strawberry FrozFruit would really hit the spot.

I'll have an Oreo Sandwich, please.

The 6-y.o. is all about the Popsicle Shaped Like SpongeBob.   A more awful confection (caution: may contain ice-cream-like substance) has not been created.  To top it off, the eyeballs are frozen gumballs, which, yuck.

  7. We just had our first ice cream truck come to our neighborhood last night. Did I run outside barefoot like a 10 year old and pay for my Chipwich in all quarters, because I don't ever carry cash? Yes, yes I did. Totally worth it.

Sorry to threadjack - but I remember some DC area Thing Throwers (Genevieve?) had children that were Nats/baseball fans. I have two tickets to the Nationals game tomorrow night that I can't use (July 8, 7:05 start vs. Padres, Strasburg not pitching).  Seats are good (two rows off field, just past 3rd base) and if you go with a cute kid wearing Nationals gear there's a decent chance to you'll end up on the jumbo-tron. Feel free to email me - meg_johns45 at yahoo dot com - if you're interested in 2 free tickets.

  9. Ice cream trucks have never been kind to me, the oddball child (and now adult) who doesn't like vanilla ice cream. (Or any flavor but chocolate, really.)  All the cool stuff - ice cream sandwiches, chipwiches, those cool bars with crumbly things on the outside - all come around vanilla ice cream.  So I was always stuck with the ices/sherbet options.  Popups were the best, those italian ice cups that you eat with a wooden spoon come in second, and the patriotic ice pop was a distant third.

Oh, thank you, Maggie, but we can't use them tomorrow -- we're going to the One Man Lord of the Rings.  But boy, those are great seats, the kiddo would love them, and if we weren't otherwise occupied I would absolutely have emailed you to say we're interested!

And I hope some other DC ThingThrower ends up happily using them!

I like this because it is now necessary to qualify one's Nats tickets as "Non-Strasburg."

  13. Depends on which truck.  One truck, if you ask for the "grilled-cheese sandwich,"  you'll get a special treat.  The other truck is a fancy homemade ice cream truck.

Hmmmm, maybe I live in a different neighborhood than the rest of you.

Ladies and gentlemen, my sister the weirdo. This did, however, work in my favor in childhood - I get 2/3 of the box of neapolitan ice cream.

from an ice cream truck, I'm pretty much a Strawberry Shortcake girl these days, but when I was younger I was all about the Nutty Buddy.
