MATT HASSELBECK, ALEX SMITH, A.J. FEELEY AND ... DEREK ANDERSON? I can't remember any division in any professional sport projecting as badly as the NFC West does right now. 9-7 clearly wins it, and maybe 8-8, right?
I think San Fran could win 10 games in one version of reality. That's the version of reality in which Frank Gore is healthy for 14 or 15 games, Michael Crabtree becomes a No. 1 receiver and Vernon Davis doesn't backslide from last year. They have playmakers on defense and really all they're asking Smith to do is be mediocre...
And I think Bradford locked up the starting QB position for the Los Angeles Rams with his half against the Pats today...
The AFC West could give them a run for their money if San Diego is as bad as some have described. Oakland'll be bad, Denver'll suck something awful. Even though I am a huge fan, KC'll only be at best 8-8. On second thought, we'll see who's worse, as I think this year the AFC West teams all have to play the NFC West teams.
I tell you, I'm getting frustrated with the 49ers for a very particular reason: my son - who just turned six - wants to root for the team with the most points. That's natural for a six year old, but it often makes it hard for him to root for the red and gold. He was a lot more into baseball this season with the Giants, because they've had some great wins and a lot of good ones. I'm okay with the team sucking as far as I'm concerned -- I don't get worked up too much about that -- but this is just a little heartbreaking.
<p>This is a bit of a threadjack, but with the MLB financial statements, should the Deadspin/journalism bit be looked at again? This is turning into a pretty big story. </p>
I'm glad to know my boys (7 & 4 1/2) aren't the only ones who cheer for the team with the most points. It drives me crazy when they'll switch who they're cheering for mid-way through a game. And then I remind myself they're kids.
Doing some digging, I'll go with 2008; you had the Vikings winning the division at only 10-6, the Bears at 9-7, the Packers at 6-10 and the Lions...well, we know about that year.
Pfft. I'm a Bears fan, and I can only dream of 8-8.
