THE SHORT ANSWER IS YES, A LOT OF THE EXTRAS WERE GANGSTERS: Scorsese, Liotta and everyone else involved talks to GQ about the making of Goodfellas, twenty years later.

    loved this:

John Malkovich (actor): It sort of came at a bad time in my life, when I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to think about working. It's hard to explain why you end up in Eragon and not GoodFellas.

I'd never known the part about Liotta's mother being very ill during the filming.  Also, the pistol whipping scene just got a heck of lot scarier (but still, how great is Bracco's voiceover about hiding the gun?)

  3. I'm not a huge fan of Goodfellas, but this was a great read. Perhaps because I love behind-the-scenes looks at movies, especially details like who almost got cast, etc.  Love the anecdote about Bracco insisting on real jewelry.  It sounded diva-ish, but with Scorcese putting real cash in everyone's pockets and getting the guys real Italian-made suits, why shouldn't she be treated the same?

This was like something the late, lamented Premiere magazine would have done.  A great read.

Kevin Costner pisses me off for lots of reasons, but largely because his execrable movie somehow won out over Goodfellas.
