YOU'LL SEE THAT LIFE IS A BALL AGAIN, LAUGHTER IS CALLING FOR YOU: Tonight begins the Fall TV Season in full, so it's worth asking: what new shows are you planning to sample? What returning shows are you excited for, and which had better turn it around quickly before they're relegated to "only if someone else says it's a good episode" status, and Mosby, I'm looking at you ...
[Speaking of which: there's a billboard on I-95 South promoting the HIMYM syndication run. Of note: NPH is front-and-center, and Josh Radnor's mostly hidden in the background. It's safe to say the show got Fonz'd.]
1. Picked up already--"Boardwalk Empire," 'Outlaw" (not because it's good--quite the opposite)
ReplyDelete2. Sampling--"Lone Star," "Hawaii Five-0," "No Ordinary Family," "Raising Hope," "Running Wilde," "Undercovers," "Better With You," "The Whole Truth," likely "Bleep My Dad Says" (for the same reasons as "Outlaw"), and potentially "Body of Proof" and "Law and Order: LA"
3. Dropped--"House" (conflicts with other options, not a huge fan of the writers' Huddy and Thirteen obsessions), "NCIS" (conflict problems, and can readily be watched in summer repeats), "Life Unexpected" ("NCIS: LA" got much better over the course of its season, while "Lux" remained meh), with "Brothers and Sisters" teetering on being dropped depending on whether the time jump they're doing improves the quality of the show.
Notwithstanding the reviews, I'll be trying The Event. (I liked FlashForward more than many, so the comparisons there are not necessarily fatal.) And Boardwalk Empire. Otherwise, I can't think of much that's new. I'm mostly excited for Community and Modern Family to return, hoping that each can avoid the sophomore slump.

Old favorites coming back or recently come back: ANTM, House, HIMYM, Parenthood, Glee, Modern Family, Community, 30Rock, The Office, Dexter. The DVR will catch the Simpsons too, which I'll occasionally watch.
New shows I'm definitely interested in: Boardwalk Empire, Running Wilde, Sister Wives!!!
And I have to admit, there aren't many new shows that I'm not at least mildly interested in. I'll be watching and listening to see if any of my trusted sources fall in love with anything I'm not already watching.
I guess maybe it's not TOO bad? Sunday nights are going to be tricky with the DVR though. Just last night it managed to mess up my recording of Mad Men while I was watching Boardwalk Empire; I don't know what it'll do when I add Dexter and Sister Wives to the mix.
Let's see: Monday nights: CHUCK! I have faith in the HIMYM crew and am hoping it's rewarded. Castle, because it's fun and comforting. Dancing with the Stars conflicts with too many other things and I think at least two of the "stars" are wastes of oxygen. Will sample Mike & Molly mosty because I love Melissa McCarthy.
ReplyDeleteTuesday nights: Thrilled already at Parenthood's returning, drooling over return of The Good Wife. Life Unexpected is on probation. Trying out Raising Hope (mostly for Dillahunt and Plimpton) and Running Wilde (mostly because I love Keri Russell).
Wednesday: Lie to Me, which I still like despite Fox trying to kill it. Hellcats, because I find Aly Michalka weirdly hypnotic and cheerleaders are my kryptonite. The Whole Truth because I watched EVERY SEASON of Numb3rs and feel a weird loyalty to Rob Morrow, dating mostly back to Northern Exposure. And because I love Maura Tierney.
Thursday: Vampire Diaries, Big Bang Theory, and Bones are all right up against each other. BBT doesn't put eps online, but it's a comedy, so I don't care if I get spoiled by waiting until next year to pick it up on DVD. I still like Grey's Anatomy (and thought it got a lot better again last year). Opposite GA's I'm torn between Nikita and picking up Fringe.
And I know it's doomed (so absolutely ZERO promos for it during Fox NFL, despite that being a likely demo for it) but I'm sticking with Human Target until Fox completely breaks my heart by cancelling it.
And on Sundays, I need reviews from people before I start watching Brothers & Sisters again.
The Human Target/Good Guys pairing on Fridays is really a great one--two light, quippy action hours with extraordinarily likable cast members. And of course, the excellence of an episode of Human Target is directly proportional to the number of times Chi McBride gets to say "Oh, hell no!" or its approximate equivalent during an episode.

ReplyDeleteMonday: I still enjoyed HIMYM last year, so am very optimistic about it getting back to form. Will check out Mike and Molly because of Melissa McCarthy and because Big Bang Theory is fun enough for me to give this a try. MAY try the Event, only out of fear that when they reveal what the event IS it will be really cool and I will have missed out. But still probably not.
Tuesday: As a comics nerd, will try No Ordinary family. Will try Raising Hope because of Earl love and because the teaser I saw looked really funny. And very happy to have Parenthood and The Good Wife back.
Wed: Welcome back Middle, MOdern Family, and Cougar Town! Nothing new looks interesting.

Big clusterf*ck at 9:00, with TAR overflow for football clashing with Boardwalk and Rubicon. Fortunately, I'm far enough behind on Rubicon and it repeats later that it's manageable.
Sunday: continuing with Mad Men and Rubicon, excited for the watermelon-tastic premiere of TAR17, and picking up Boardwalk Empire based on Alan's and Dan's (and everyone else's) rave reviews. Which locks me in to HBO for a while longer, but that's OK for now....and as a result, I might get sucked into S2 of Bored to Death and Eastbound and Down. Thankfully HBO reruns stuff a lot, because otherwise Sundays would be unhealthy.
ReplyDeleteMonday: Continuing with HIMYM, but it's definitely On Notice. Continuing with Castle, because it's just a great, breezy hour of TV. Will sample Lone Star, but soapy isn't my thing - if it goes too far down that road, buh-bye. Also The Event, notwithstanding Alan's and Dan's pans -- I was quick to drop FlashForward last year, so I'll have no hesitation if this really blows too. Will probably also sample Five-O at some point - I can see that being a sometimes food.
Tuesday: returning - Glee. Sampling - Running Wilde, but again, not afraid to cut it loose quickly if it's not working. Will probably sample No Ordinary Family, but the lessons of Heroes still burn brightly. Will try Detroit 1-8-7, because I like Imperioli and Lt. Fancy and I've been looking for a good procedural for a few years since getting sick of CSI Original Recipe. Interested to see how it fares as straight ahead drama without the faux documentary style.
Wed: Modern Family and Cougar Town returning. Already locked into Survivor: Coach Jimmy Johnson, as well as Top Chef: Just Desserts (though that's entirely expendable, bc no one in Ep 1 emerged as particularly likable) and Terriers. May try Undercovers, but I already have a rocky relationship with non-Lost JJ Abrams series.
Thurs: Community. 30 Rock, but on a short leash. The Office, but on a short leash. Parks and Rec once its time slot usurper crashes and burns. If I can get up to speed on the Season 2 DVDs anytime soon, then Fringe (unless someone tells me that I can watch the S2 2-hour finale and be as up to speed as I'll need to be - then I'll dive right in again).
Friday: Human Target. That is all.
Whew! That's a lot!
Monday: I'm looking forward to HIMYM working its way back to good, and I'm gonna give H50 a shot, out of loyalty to the personnel. House and Chuck will forever have me, although I'll be watching House with the lack of urgency I had last year (namely, waiting eight days for it to show up on Hulu) -- it's just not that big a deal to me anymore.
ReplyDeleteTuesday: I can't decide whether or not I'm going to catch myself up on the second half of the first season of Glee and pick up on S2 with everyone else (I fell off when an episode was called Bad Reputation and failed to have cute people singing Freedy Johnston songs) -- I'm crazy psyched for Parenthood, although I'm disappointed that TWoP has cancelled Miss Alli's awesome recaps for low ratings. No Ordinary Family wants me to watch it, and if I can find time for the first two eps, I'll give it a shot, although I'll probably wait 'til week two and watch them back to back to allow for post-pilot retooling.
Wednesday: Modern Family! I'll be dropping Hell's Kitchen, because I love scallops too much to stomach how sick of them that show makes me (although a few seasons ago, it was fun to hate that Kevin guy for continually pronouncing them "scah-lops" ala Ramsey), hoping that I can instead find some webby way to watch a new season of the F Word if they make another one. Undercovers has me for at least a few eps, and I'm not going to watch it, but I'd like to thank from the bottom of my heart the staff of The Defenders for having the vision to recognize the common threats posed to quality by James Belushi and Jerry O'Connell and confining them to one show. Kudos! May these blights be purged from our day.
Thursday: I'm very excited to have my NBC shows back, especially Community and 30 Rock (mostly Community). Bones too, although I watch that the same way I watch House (they are, after all, pretty much the same show). I smell 6 Degrees-style failure all over My Generation, so I'll need to see good reviews to tune in. Big Bang Theory is important to me and i'm glad to have it back, and I'm nervous for the quality of SMDS, but I'll probably give it a shot. As per usual, I will be resolving not to watch Grey's anymore, but marathoning it four episodes at a time when I need a decent cry. Shut up.
Friday: I am led to understand that I never should have dropped Smallville or Supernatural from my rosters. Still, I need something to look forward to in my old age, when syndication will be my best friend!

Looking at this daunting list again, I think it may be time to invest the $25 for TiVo Desktop Plus, so I can watch the backlog on my iPod Touch during my commute, lunch, etc. Anyone out there who can offer a review re: the quality of the conversion?

Thursday -- The Office and Community. Giving up on 30 Rock -- the last few seasons have been weak, and I don't know... I just can't make myself care anymore.
Friday -- I don't know if there's anything here I'll watch.
There are a few others I'm sort of marginally interested in: Running Wilde, Detroit 1-8-7. Oh, and I forgot Lone Star and don't know when it's on. I'll definitely watch that one.
The only new shows that we are contemplating adding are Undercovers, The Whole Truth (What? I like Maura Tierney.), and maybe a slight chance of The Event, although we both felt a bit burned by Flash Forward last year. And I picked up Top Chef: Just Desserts last week---we'll see if it lasts. Otherwise, glad to have Chuck, Castle, and Bones back, and we may give Glee another chance. Not sure if I'll be trying TAR again, and I seem to have missed this whole Project Runway season. I need to find a source for that Santino/Austin show. Heh.

ReplyDeleteI use iTivo on my Mac (free) rather than TiVo Desktop Plus, but the quality of the conversion to iPhone/iPod is good. It's slow to pull the show off of the TiVo HD over WiFi, and converting video can be slow, but it's very convenient to be able to do. The quality is good -- as good as downloads from iTunes.

ReplyDeleteMonday: Definitely "Lone Star". Will give "The Event" a look-see, partly because the reviews make it sound so oddly bad that I'm interested, and also I will watch Laura Innes in anything. Might check out "Mike & Molly" but not sure when, and will give "Hawaii Five-O" a look, but doubt it'll stick.
Tuesday: "No Ordinary Family" sounds interesting, and has people I like (esp. Autumn Reeser). I guess I should look at "Running Wilde", but I'm really not optimistic. Also, under stuff to drop I'm expecting to drop "Life Unexpected", but I haven't quite got there yet.
Wednesday: "Undercovers" could have potential. "Better With You", as I'm one of the 5 people who've been hoping for a Jennifer Finigan-Josh Cooke project since "Committed" went off the air. Add me to the Maura Tierney Fan Club for "The Whole Truth". Watched the first episode of "Hellcats" and I haven't deleted the second one from my DVR yet. And "Terriers" is a lot of fun, and everybody should be watching it.
Thursday: "Nikita" I'm definitely enjoying so far. That's about it.
Friday: "Blue Bloods" has some positive buzz, and good people, so I will check it out. Oh yeah, and the Dana Delany one.

Mad Men.
My HBO (and other premiums) OnDemand doesn't seem to offer HD. And with most of my premium shows, especially something like BE, I really want to see it in HD. If anyone has TWC (especially in NYC) and knows something I don't, please enlighten me! Actually it won't help that much in this case though, because it'll be two premiums head-to-head at 9pm, and then two basic cable channels head-to-head at 10pm, for a few weeks at least. Plus OnDemand is the least reliable part of my cable service so I hate to rely on it. Sometimes the DVR screws up too, though. You should have seen the crazy things it did to Mad Men last night! I ended up giving up and waiting for the 11:00 rerun.
ReplyDeleteI think Gretchen is legit annoying AND they are giving her the villain edit plus a lot of encouragement of her behavior behind the scenes. I mean in some cases it's just so obvious. And I am TOTES rooting for Mondo, high five sconstant! Good season. I'm actually falling in love with reality TV all over again this season because last week's ANTM just contained so much awesome, too.
I already feel overwhelmed by the shows I'm sticking with, so I'm not sure if I have room for new shows this year.

I'm also at least going to audition No Ordinary Family, Running Wilde, The Event, Blue Bloods and My Generation, but I'll be surprised if I stick with more than a couple of those. This certainly seems like a bad season for new shows.
ReplyDeleteReturning shows I'll keep watching: Friday Night Lights (once it gets back on DirecTV), Glee, Parenthood, The Good Wife, How I Met Your Mother, Modern Family, Castle, Chuck, Cougar Town, Gossip Girl, The Office, Big Bang Theory, Parks and Rec (whenever it comes back), Community, 30 Rock, Brothers and Sisters, Desperate Housewives. I always consider giving up Grey's Anatomy, 90210 and Private Practice, but I wouldn't be surprised if I keep watching them for nostalgia's sake.

I just saw what I think was a good review of Mike & Molly in the Times (I hedge because the review was so interested in pointing out that Mike and Molly were fat people! On TV! How fascinating! that it failed to really give me a sense of the merits of the show.) It made me more interested in the show than I had been -- maybe I'll give it a shot.

II.) I did some quick calculations. By watching most shows on DVR, I save about 6.5 hours of my life a week, and that doesn't even include the value-added from time-shifting.

Returning shows are the usual: Chuck, The Middle, Modern Family, Cougar Town, Community, BBT, Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec (I hope sooner, rather than later!), Sunny, and Project Runway. Good Guys and Human Target if I'm bored on Fridays.
Marsha, it seems it will be only you and me tuning in from these parts. Other than a few episodes of the very first season, I can't say I have watched it much before. It is definitely a different experience with a rooting interest, though. My favorite comment about the premiere was from my 9 year-old who simply said "I don't like all the yelling. They should have fired the lady that was yelling."

ReplyDeleteI DVR'd the premiere of Terriers based on Alan S's recommendation, but haven't watched it yet and forgot to set the DVR for future episodes. We'll see if I like it enough to catch up....
I have immense goodwill for Melissa McCarthy and Swoosie Kurtz, but the timeslot is too cramped already (Lone Star, Event, Gossip Girl), and Chuck Lorre shows often are a mixed bag until they've found time to gel. Hated the Big Bang pilot, but it has evolved into a fine show--perhaps this'll do the same.

ReplyDeleteThe pilot had enough good moments to keep me around a few weeks, but if they don't stop with the barrage of fat jokes (and completely lame fat jokes), then I'm gone pretty soon.They're creating two main characters that I could really love, and they had some very funny, real stuff in there, but the secondary characters are all one-dimensional and stupid, and the fat jokes, the horrid, demeaning fat jokes, will keep me away if they don't stop.

It was the second to the last episode of Bachelor Pad. Hysterical, I must say. And I have to add that the Pop Culture Happy Hour is quickly becoming the highlight of my Friday workday. I heartily endorse checking it out.

Thursday nothing seems intresting and I tried to get into Fringe but even with glimpses of Sebastian Roche I can't deal with it. I may see what Grey's Anatomy is up to but the show hasn't worked for me well since Preston Burke was fired.
Friday Blue Bloods
I wish I had HBO for Boardwalk Empire but I'll catch it someday.
