YOU CAN'T STOP THE BIEBER: Tonight, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences will announce the nominees in the 109 categories for the Grammy awards. For reasons explicable only to someone who's not me, the eligibility year is September 1, 2009-September 30, 2010, meaning that big recent albums (Speak Now, The Incredible Machine, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy) are not eligible, though early release singles may be ("Mine" would seem a safe bet for nods in at least the country categories), and older albums are (Susan Boyle, Michael Buble, Jay-Z's most recent). HitFix has a preview, suggesting we're in for a big year for Gaga, Lady Antebellum, and Eminem. Anyone you're rooting for or against?

They cut off the deadline so that they have time to get submissions from labels/artists, send out the potential nominees to voters, tally up the votes, and then hold a tedious nominee announcement show tonight.  (All of which the Grammys would probably acknowledge, except for the tedious part.)

Miranda Lambert, baby.  I want her nominated for everything that she can get.  After that:  Florence + the Machine, Vampire Weekend, and Arcade Fire.

Ke$ha kind of horrifies me, but her numbers are undeniable, so I would be annoyed but not particularly surprised if she gets a BNA nomination and maybe some other nominations.  Similar thoughts on the Bieber (although he more mystifies me, than horrifies me).  And call me a contrarian, but I, for one, would laugh my derriere off if SuBo got nominated for BNA.  That would be absolutely hilarious.

  2. I'll submit a wild card for a BNA nomination--"Cast of Glee."  3 full lengths and 2 EPs during the eligibility period, all of which were Top 5 albums in the US, with three of those going to #1.  Not sure how the eligibility works, but from a pure sales perspective, they have as good an argument as anyone else.

Grammy time always reminds me how out of touch I am. Who are any of these people!?!?!?!

That said, this huge Arcade Fire fan has high hopes . . .

I doubt that the cast of Glee was eligible, which would not seem particularly fair as they have so many individual singers who may be lead on a given song.  Despite my (looking-to-be-amused) support for SuBo, I tend to think that the fact that the Glee songs are covers make any claim by the cast for Grammy recognition a bit suspect.

And then there's the fact that, while their stuff tends to start out with a big bang, none of it has sold truly spectacularly well.  I think that only one of their songs has sold platinum (Ke$ha's Tik Tok may well have outsold all of the Glee songs combined, or at least come close, and then she had some other crappy-but-successful songs on her side of the ledger).  One album sold platinum, and two sold gold, which is good in this sales economy, but I suspect that Bieber's EP and CD have combined to outsell all of the Glee albums & EPs (combined).  It also would not surprise me to find that Lady Antebellum's album has outsold all of the Glee stuff combined.

  5. What's striking to me is that Glee, like HSM before it, is accomplishing decent album sales and having pretty much every single/album track chart on the Hot 100 courtesy of digital sales, without pretty much ANY radio play at all.  The Grammys don't mind cover albums/performances at all in the album categories.

True.  Like Herbie Hancock's concept album of Joni Mitchell, which won it all.  That said, I don't really see Glee's covers in the same way, at least not in general.  But that is just my opinion.

  7. Biggest nonsense thus far?  "Teenage Dream" for Album of the Year.  Though Cee Lo being nominated for record and song of the year almost makes up for that.

Agreed.  Just about every review I saw of TD said that the first four songs were great singles, but the rest of the album was, well, not.  Sounds like the definition of "singles with filler."

And Glee did get nominated for Don't Stop Believing and for soundtrack.
