I'm on vacation in New York and we're trying to figure put what we can do today (besides hope that our friends have a snow day.) we were out in the storm last night and wow, that was terrifying. I live in Chicago and grew up in northern Wisconsin, and never saw anything like it.
Open at 10 in Newark NJ. The snow meter in our yard said 17 inches this morning, but I forgot to look before the storm to see how much of that was leftovers.
Open here in Manhattan, although everyone was advised to work from home if they could. I could have, except I seem to have lost my VPN token and am waiting for a new one. Walked a half-block to the subwat station, got in, went two stops, got out, walked a block to my office and here I sit.
FYI -- If you are in NYC and want to walk around the Times Square Area, avoid the Bank of America Building, which, amongst it's many design flaws (the biggest of which was windows popping out randomly and crashing down onto the pedestrians on 42nd Street) seems to have not been designed to handle snow and large chunks of ice are steadily crashing to the ground right now as it melts.
The federal government is open with a two-hour delay, but I got permission to telework, which is good, as I have plenty of work to do on a brief. Avoiding the crappy commuting conditions will help with getting it done. Also, it's comfy in here, and I can't say that it looks very comfy out there.

Here in southern part of DC-land, took the wife ten hours to drive home last night. The clusterfuck that was traffic starting at 3 pm was historic. She didn't see one police car the entire time. Most roads she took were down to one lane due to everyone just leaving their cars on the roads.
As mentioned earlier, I don't think my office in Manhattan ever formally "closes" unless ordered to by the city/landlord, so I came in. Unsurprisingly, basically no one at the partner level (many of whom live in the 'burbs) is in, nor are most secretarial staff. I have a 3 PM meeting scheduled, but I fully expect it'll be cancelled. Commute wasn't bad, though the F train was packed to the gills such that I had to wait on the platform for a second one at the station beneath my building.
I'm open, husband's closed. Office is quiet; narrowly avoided a giant hunk of snow that fell off a building as I passed; huge piles of snow do not deter men who like to harass women on the street.
Was able to get into NYC from New Jersey, but the trains were almost completely empty. But if my street is plowed (& I parked on it), I can usually get in.

So knowing the federal government was opening on a delay, I went in at the normal time and had very quick 15 minute commute by Metro. Office is generally a ghost town - most people who are in suburban MD and VA didn't attempt to make it in. Since I declared it a personal "jeans" day, I'm not too upset to be here.
Snow day in Brooklyn. All of my school's buildings are closed, so no meetings for me (I had three today). I'm thinking of watching "Slings & Arrows," reading more of "Finishing the Hat," and maybe venturing a few blocks to the gym. Big plans.
Oddly, while Manhattan federal courts are closed, NYS state courts are generally open (though may be limited to intake/arraignment), and Brooklyn federal is open.
Central NJ. Office opened at 10. I got here around 11, had to wait for the lanscaping/snow removal guys to come plaw my long and curvy driveway. Attendance is thin, at best.
My boss is working from home. Every time it snows she gives me a guilt-laden speech about how she wishes she could set me up to work from home but can't get approval for the cost. I hate that speech.

Closed in Cambridge, MA. Husband and I are both working from home, and driving each other a little crazy... plus we have no furniture in the house yet (moving truck on Saturday!), so we're both sitting on the floor, which is amazingly uncomfortable. So we're cranky and driving each other crazy.
He is sitting across from me now. How do I tell him his techno music is driving me insane??
My company's "we don't follow the Fed anymore" policy today was...to open 2 hours late. Which is what the fed gov did. I am not sure why we made a big deal out of changing our policy if we're still going to follow it.
I left my car downtown yesterday and took Metro/walked home. Husband, who I would not want on my team during a zombie apocalypse, insisted on driving home from Georgetown, got stuck after 1.5 hours waiting to cross Key Bridge (car overheated), turned around to wait it out a coworkers house. At this point, it was 8:45. I told him to stay there, or just walk to Metro and Metro/walk home. He chose to "wait out the traffic." Finally, at 10:30, called say that he decided to leave the car at their house and Metro/walk home. Which is a decision he could have made at, oh, 8:46.
Which would also solve our other problem, which is no caffeine in the house (well, no access, as our kitchen is being painted as we speak). I'll broach the subject, see how it's received.
Closed (my office), closed (wife's school), and closed (kids' school). Ruler check on our front stoop, which was clear before last night, told us that just over 9 inches fell in our part of L. Merion. Slept in a bit, and then spent the next couple hours digging out; now working from home.

So, we went for sandwiches and now we're back, he hasn't turned on the techno yet, I was thinking about turning on Twilight (on the auxillary laptop) in retaliation. Will this ruin my marriage?
The "zombie apocalypse" line made me laugh pretty hard. Not sure how the boyfriend would do on that scale. Although he does know and appreciate the concept of the "double tap."

EDNY is hard core. I don't think they ever close for snow, probably because so many of the judges live in easy walking distance from the courthouse.

ReplyDelete2 hour delay on Long Island. My dad, who works in NoVa but lives in Maryland, spent 12 hours on the GW Parkway and got home at 5 a.m. Fun for him.

Why thank you. I'd be pretty good, except for the gore. The gore would gross me out. But I don't complain and I am good at staying calm in a crisis.
