SNOWPOCALYPSE NOW! Our regular open thread for Northeast snowfall discussion and its aftermath. Schools closed here in Philadelphia, but my office will be opening at 10am.
I wish you could have posted this over the past two days for the Southeast Snowpocolypse. I've been pretty bored for being stuck at home for a couple of days. Can't believe I'm about to say this, but I'm glad I get to go to work today (after a small delay.)
Substantial snow in Manhattan, but major streets are clear (combo of plowing and heat from cars driving) and NYC public schools are open. (Sidewalks outside my building do not appear to have been shoveled, though.) Debating whether to work from home or come in, knowing that pretty much no one from the 'burbs will come in.
Kids are on two hour delay (per LMSD, as Leslie mentioned above); work closed bc Phila. schools are closed (great rule, since my job has absolutely nothing to do with Phila schools); wife's work closed. Today is Kid the Younger's 7th birthday, so we're celebrating extra long this morning, with Pillsbury sugar cookies at breakfast and an imminent sledding run down the driveway on her new saucer, if we can drag her away from another one of her presents, "This Is Not a Book." Plus, now at least one of us can be at school for her classroom celebration.
Visiting in the Philadelphia media market, and I am LOVING hearing the channel 6 Action News theme again. I can't believe they don't use that nation-wide.
Working from home, but could have gotten into NY if I had to. Had an all-day meeting planned, as it included folks from Boston and Philly, but it was cancelled, leaving me with an open schedule today to get work done! Only 7 inches or so here in Northern NJ. They canceled school last night and are presumably regretting that decision now.
I decided to go in a bit late (darn that Protestant work ethic!), and no real problems. Sidewalk outside/around my building shoveled by the Whole Foods at the bottom of the building and my building staff, subway pretty much normal (though much tracked-in slush), and sidewalks and streets around my office (just South of Grand Central) cleared. Office largely empty, so likely to close my office door and listen to the new episode of Extra Hot Great.
I'm with you- my office has been closed all week, and I've been stuck inside with a 2 year old and a 4 year old. We're all bored out of our minds, watching too much TV and wrecking the house (them) and futilely trying to clean it (me and my husband). It's also nearly impossible for me to get any work done with the kids around. Amusingly, the messages from my office have been getting more explicit about how we lawyers can arrange staff coverage from other offices.
I'm in the middle of Atlanta, and we got about 4 inches that half melted yesterday and is now ice. My sister is in a northern suburb and got 6-7 inches.
Lots of non-shoveled sidewalks in my Queens neighborhood and around my work in Manhattan (West 42nd Street). Otherwise, subway was surprisingly easy, given that the 7 train calls in sick every time it drizzles.
Honestly, I didn't even think of it Adam. I know that it is my fault. :)
I'm in Columbia, SC. My courthouse was closed Monday and Tuesday and had a two hour delay today. Luckily, no one had to get anything covered since I only deal with my county and it was completely shut down.
We had a few inches of snow and then quite a bit of ice. I've never seen anything like it. We had eight inches of snow last year, but no ice. Plus, I grew up in South Florida so this is completely foreign to me.
We're on our third snow day here in Athens. Major streets have finally be cleared but not most side streets. What's left on yards and such is creme brûlée snow. That's what's still on my driveway and the only bit really standing betweenme and freedom. Alas, I wasn't smart enough to pull a shovel out of the shed before the snowfall, and the I can't open the shed without digging it out. Conundrum! I may be out there with a cookie sheet, a broom, and a hand trowel.
Even with just an inch, my brother had a two-hour delay this morning because Montgomery County can never get it together. I love snow, but when I go back to school on Sunday it's going to be 72 degrees. So ready.
In academia, far worse than the snow days are the days where the school is open, but half the class either assumes it's a snow day, or can't get out of their driveways. I still have to teach, but now I have to decide whether to a) teach the same thing again next week, or b) skip the entire thing for those who didn't make it, and re-work all the future quizzes and exams to reflect that. If I was planning to make a career of this, it would keep me up nights.
We're about to spend 2 days in LA, deciding whether or not we want to move there. Where should we go, what should we see, whom should we talk to? How does one even make a decision like this in a weekend?
Interesting. On my walk in the outer borough of Brooklyn this morning, the only sidewalk that was shoveled en route to the subway was the one in front of my house. (My landlord is awesome.) I had a choice of 10" of snow on the sidewalks, or dodging cars on the relatively clear streets. Thanks Chancellor Black!
I completely grossed out my Georgia relatives by sending photos from the pool area where I was working on Monday. What? I was in Miami, and figured that, if I needed to read a bunch of cases before my oral argument, what better place than in the sun, by the pool?
Then I returned to (somewhat) snowy DC. Next, I head to (fairly) snowy Chicago. Sigh.
I always make sure to facebook update that I am by the pool on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day when I'm visiting my parents to piss everyone else off :)
In my neck of Brooklyn, streets and sidewalks were nearly all clear when I left this morning. Of course, I didn't leave until 11. I was looking forward to a full snow day, but for 5" of snow? That'd just be weak.
Go see the beach. In January. You won't be the only ones there. That's reason enough to move to LA in my book. And I just looked at the weather forecast for the weekend, sunny and low 70s. Heaven on earth. (Says the girl who left LA for Connecticut, and who left Connecticut for Helsinki. I'd go back to LA in a New York minute!) Enjoy your trip, whatever you decide!
Mmmm---I might. The weekend is a touch crazy---I'm actually coming into town for my district court judge's retirement festivities---but Monday morning/lunch looks like a possibility. I'll email you....
Looking at the local paper's article on road conditions and it seems like every one of the probable routes for me to get to work has a closed/problem area. I think I'm gonna reroute my trip. I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped if I went to UGA, via Omaha.
Yeah, I had to leave about 7am in order to ensure that I wouldn't be late to school. Good thing I did, since someone pulled the emergency brake on my train! Luckily, coming home just, things were VERY clear -- much better than usual here in WT. My neighbors even finally figured out that we need paths from the sidewalk to the street!
Heh. The ACC police called into WUGA around 7 or so tonight and said there'd been more wrecks in the previous two hours than on the previous 3 days. Apparently, the snow melted today but didn't dry so there's now black ice everywhere. They've put sand in some spots, but no salt.
UGA's delayed opening til 11 tomorrow but Clarke Co schools are closed the whole day.

If I remember correctly from my days at UGA, "problem area" may mean "snow visible within .5 miles of this spot."
