IT WASN'T THE BEST EFFORT NECESSARILY AS A SHOW, BUT IN TERMS OF BEING ABLE TO GENERATE INTEREST AND BUZZ, IT SUCCEEDED IN DROVES: The true story of 1989's Super Bowl halftime show, a 3-D extravaganza starring "Elvis Presto" and a heaping helping of lameness. (Speaking of which: who thought having Brian Boitano and Dorothy Hamill skating in 1992 was a good idea?)

The best halftime performance, of course: Prince. I have no idea what #2 is (U2?), but it won't be challenged today.

Hmm, when I saw the title on Twitter, I was guessing this was about last night's SNL.

I thought this would be about SNL too! And I think Springsteen's crotchbombing halftime show is a close #3 after U2.

Tom Petty was pretty great, too. I'd put him up with U2 and Springsteen.

The U2 performances scores higher than Prince, at least for me, because of the context. Performing "Where The Streets Have No Name", in February 2002, while the names of all the people killed in the 9/11 attacks were projected on two cloth spires? It was pretty transcendent.

Well yes, since he gets to play the Greatest Rock n' Roll Song of All Time.

I thought Springsteen's Super Bowl performance was awful.

Back in the day, I used to be a huge fan of his and growing up in central New Joisey, he really did have demi-god status.

But these days, I think he's more of a nostalgia act.

Give me Prince every year, and I'll be a happy camper.

So disappointed. Love the peas! Production was AWFUL. Could someone please give Fergie a mike that was somewhat consistent in cutting out.

The thing I remember the most about U2 was the projection of the 9/11 victims' names on the screen.  More specifically, the fact that they were listing them alphabetically and the promptly cut it of around the letter K because, you know, the song was over.

Agreed. And did anyone notice that half the V didn't light up? You think that would have been someone's job. I did kind of dig the dancing on the field. Reminded me of an Olympics type thing. Actually, so did the Lea Michele thing- very Opening Ceremonies-esque.
