CLASSIC WINGER: We like Grantland, and we like Joel McHale, so Joel McHale writing for Grantland about his short-lived career as a walk-on football player for the Washington Huskies is something that we have to link to.

As someone who was decidedly non-athletic for the first 15 years of his life, before playing football in high school, I can really appreciate just how much the quickly-gestated choice to join a team can change your life. At this risk of sounding incredible cliché, I learned a lot of life lessons about the value of self-sacrifice, fitting in, the importantance of social skills, and how to work out. I'd never really been a part of something bigger than myself, and I got that chance. Plus: I met my best friend, and formed a lot of deep bonds, at those early practices in the withering summer heat.
