WHAT'S CHANNEL 9 IF IT DOESN'T HAVE ARSENIO? File under "Things That Make You Go ... Him?" In fall 2013, Arsenio Hall will once again have a late night talk show. Is he likable? Sure. Is late night tv too white? Yes. But is it 2012, and not 1989? I think so.

  1. I think there may be room, but he's got to pitch it squarely to the African-American audience--the hip, young audience that he targeted back in the 90s has aged into comfort with Leno/Letterman and/or is watching Conan/Colbert/Stewart. Hip Hop Squares has done very very well (by cable standards) by targetting that sort of audience. The bigger problem is going to be getting national carriage--stations are going to be very reluctant to give up the extremely lucrative Simpsons/Family Guy/Big Bang reruns that they presently run from 11 PM-1 AM for a talk show.

  2. Carriage seems to be ok, albeit not on major stations:

The as-yet-untitled late-night show will be carried by Tribune Broadcasting stations, with Tribune partnering on the production of the show. Hall's new show is set to launch on 17 Tribune stations, including New York's WPIX, KTLA in Los Angeles, and Chicago's WGN. The show has so far been sold in all of the top 10 markets covering 52 percent of the country, with more to come.

CBS Television Stations in cities including Boston, San Francisco, Atlanta and Detroit will also air the series, with stations from Local TV LLC in cities such as Denver, Cleveland and St. Louis also on-board to carry the show.

  3. The question is what timeslot they're getting. PIX is the CW affiliate in NYC, and presently does 10 PM news, 11 PM Seinfeld (which they shelled out a lot of money for a few years back to take away from another station), and midnight Friends. I'd guess midnight start time, which isn't ideal, but does keep it away from head to head with Stewart/Colbert/Conan.

Checking the current Chicago timeslot, 10 PM (post the 9 news) is 30 Rock, Two and a Half Man, Family Guy and 30 Rock again. I can imagine they can shuffle that so you get a Two and a Half Men and Family Guy hour after Hall.
