GONNA FLY NOW: With music and lyrics from Ragtime's Ahrens/Flaherty and book from three-time Tony winner (Hairspray, Annie, The Producers) Tom Meehan and Sylvester Stallone, Rocky: The Musical will arrive at the Winter Garden Theatre, currently home to Mamma Mia!, next February.  (But don't worry, ABBA-heads, Mamma Mia is just moving a few blocks down the street to the Broadhurst, where it will continue to run.)  Next season is already shaping up to be an interesting one for musicals, with Rocky, Big Fish, Disney's Aladdin, Diner: The Musical (with an original score by Sheryl Crow), Houdini, Ever After, and If/Then (the Idina Menzel show from the folks who did Next To Normal) all currently having plans.  (Contrast this year, where it's likely at least one of the four Best Musical nominees will be long-closed.)

  2. Once On This Island's Flaherty is involved Rocky? OK, that show is now a lot more intriguing than I thought.

Aw, this was an extremely good post. Spending some time and actual effort to create a superb
article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and don't seem to get anything done.

Don't put limits on what you eat as much as you do how much you are eating. You could always join a fitness related group on Facebook, though. Let's say you
want to be able to run 10 miles without stopping.

  5. The key collaborator on ROCKY is director Alex Timbers. I mean, he made a disco musical about Imelda Marcos utterly compelling.

I doubt that DINER or EVER AFTER will make it to Broadway, and there's no way HOUDINI is happening this season (Sorkin dropped out and they haven't announced a new bookwriter). Look out for the Shakespeare in the Park LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST musical by Timbers and his BLOODY BLOODY collaborator Michael Friedman. If it gets good reviews, it'll transfer to Broadway.

  6. The wild card for next season is Here Lies Love transferring to the Circle In The Square, which has been dark since Godspell closed.

I saw Big Fish this past week - it's very enjoyable, but unless they substantially retool the first act and deepen some of the relationship-building, it should only be a big Tony contender in the technical categories. That said, the sets, costumes, and lights for this show are extraordinary.

Norbert Leo Butz was good, but he hasn't found the performance yet - it's still pretty shallow. I'm hopeful he'll be better by the time it hits Broadway. Kate Baldwin was quite good, but the part is underwritten. The rest of the cast is relatively unmemorable.

I FULLY acknowledge that a 2:30-minute video is not a reliable indicator, but nothing in the promotional video they have put out is encouraging me at all.

  9. Despite terrible reviews, Motown: The Musical is a commercial juggernaut, and seems likely to be nominee number 3. Also eligible--Chaplin, Hardbody, Bring It On, A Christmas Story, and Scandalous.

While it's a revival, Cinderella is eligible for book, since Douglas Carter Beane did an entirely new book, and seems likely to get in there, which means Carter Beane could be nominated both for book and for new play (The Nance). (Book is Matilda/Kinky Boots/Cinderella and a wildcard.)

Score is tough because there are only 7 eligible, and I can't imagine them nominating Scandalous.
