Sadly, it seems there are a limited number of locations -- I've had a lot of repeats. Also, I'm wondering, what kind of limits are you putting on yourself? Do you allow yourself to move down the street? To simply rotate the view? Not even that? If you can read a sign on a building, do you allow yourself to Google it to find out where it is (I nailed a hotel that way, but felt dirty doing it)?
Via Twitter, their to-do list: - Ability to compete using the same locations - Increase of points awarded to "really close" guesses - Less Australia (or more like "normal amount" Australia) - Better randomization function
I think rotating and zooming and moving are clearly fine. It's the use of outside googling that ... depends on your mood. (I got a Lake Worth, FL public beach that way, within 1 km.)
It reminds me of an old science fiction short story I read once upon a time, where residents of an orbital colony sent contestants down to the ruined Earth to see who'd be the first to figure out where they'd been dropped. Damned if I can remember the author or title now, though. Time to start digging through my old Gardner Dozois anthologies...
This is awesome. First try: 18528 points, using Mystery Hunt rules: all outside googling, etc, is totally fine. Nothing in Australia; two in Europe, one in Florida, one in Mexico, one in Brazil.
You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this
