THUS EXPLAINING THE SUCCESS OF GROWN UPS 2New York City is in the midst of a major heat wave, and the New York Post is reporting that folks are saying that they'll see a movie just to get into some overpowering AC.  (See also Linda Holmes' "how hot does it have to be before I'll see this movie just for the AC" thermometer from 3 years ago.)  Fortunately, there are a number of decent options, so you don't have to resort to Grown Ups 2, and I give credit to the lady in the article who inadvertently chose Indian film Bhaag Milka Bhaag, since it has a 3+ hour run time.

Lincoln Plaza Cinema has the best popcorn (and pretty serious people-watching). But the longest movie they have right now is 1:47.

  2. The plus of the big AMC megaplex is that it makes the "full day for one ticket" very easy to do. Except for big movies opening weekend, ticket check is only at the main entrance. #notendorsingillegalactivity

  3. And there are finally movies I want to see in the theaters! I'm interested in Fruitvale Station, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Way Way Back.

  4. I know! It seems like all there's been for months is superhero or animated movies. (Confess to enjoying "Monsters University" with the boyfriend and his 10-year-old son.) I'd add "The Heat" and "We're the Millers" to the list, too.

If enjoying Monsters U as an adult is wrong, then I'm on the wrong blog.

I saw Clueless and Braveheart six times each in the theater during the Chicago heatwave of the Summer of 1995 for precisely this reason.

  7. Ha! Not wrong, just not usually my cup of tea, and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it.

Wow. Now I want to see Grown Ups 2:

"Grown Ups 2 opens with a CGI deer invading Adam Sandler’s bedroom, standing up on its hind legs, and pissing in his face; it ends with Sandler simultaneously farting, sneezing, and burping while having sex with Salma Hayek. In between, the audience is treated to Nick Swardson shitting in a Kmart and making out with a dog, David Spade sensuously licking a female bodybuilder’s bicep while wearing a John Oates costume, members of The Lonely Island rubbing their asses on the soapy windshield of Kevin James’ car while wearing cheerleading uniforms, and Shaquille O’Neal filling a swimming pool with his urine."
