BETTY BOTTER BOUGHT SOME BUTTER, BUT SHE SAID, "THIS BUTTER'S BITTER!":  It's been so long since I've spent time on the East Coast, I forgot this was a thing.  But here's why butter comes in thick, short cubes in the West, but long, narrow cubes back East.

I did not know, until this moment, the butter came in anything other than long, narrow sticks.

Me too! I don't know where you live, but I'm in southwestern Ontario and have visited the west coast many times but have never had reason to buy butter there. I had no idea this was a thing.

Draw a line straight south from Ottawa and that where I live. It's one of those things that is at the same time insignificant and mind blowing. I never imagined there was another way of doing it.

Pennsylvania, where the butter comes in sticks and the fake butter comes in tubs.

I didn't know it was a thing, though I did notice the different sizes when I moved here. I just figured it was a local manufacturing thing.

We can actually get both versions. Trader Joe carries the stubby cubes; all other retailers have the long sticks. Is this an east of the Mississippi, west of the Mississippi thing? (I'm in the west of the Mississippi part of Minneapolis)

Me as well. I suppose now that I think about it, I've probably seen the fat block on TV and subconsciously chalked it up to "sometimes things are different on TV than in real life."

Which I'm starting to wonder if that's EVER true. Like when I was a kid and thought bowling balls with three holes were a Flintstones thing. (Because I lived in a region where all bowling alleys were candlepin-only).

When I was 18 I moved to Baltimore and was surprised to learn what people meant by bowling, because I believe all the alleys in Baltimore City were duckpin only.

I'm on the East Coast, and we do now have the stubby cubes available as well in some stores. I just thought it was a newfangled thing.

  12. I refuse to buy butter at Trader Joe's because it won't fit in my butter dish.
