I'LL TAKE EUPHEMISMS FOR $400, ALEX:  The MPAA has given Fifty Shades of Grey an 'R' rating for "strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity."  (Emphasis added; lack of Oxford comma's on them, not me.)

Related, from 2007: the ten oddest MPAA ratings justifications, including "a bawdy puppet show" (PG-13); "graphic, crude and sexual humor, violent images and strong language; all involving puppets" (NC-17); and "intense depiction of very bad weather" (PG-13).

  1. I'm a little surprised they didn't intentionally submit something that they knew would get an NC-17 and make cuts just for the sake of the PR.

Love that you clarified the non-Oxford comma. :)

I can't be the only one who wondered what "unusual graphic nudity" was.

They're not necessarily wrong. What we have to look at is the scope of the strong sexual content. If the content includes the unusual behavior and graphic nudity, then it would be incorrect to include a comma. If the unusual behavior and graphic nudity are unrelated to the sexual content (and using our context cues, I don't think they are), then you have a comma issue. Although then you might want a comma after "content," especially if the list is longer than they quoted section and divided by semicolons, but I'm not sure if that's required.

I like the actor's assertion that "I think plane spotting is far weirder than S&M. That I really don’t get. I can understand why people are into S&M, but standing outside Heathrow Terminal 5 waiting for Ryanair to come in?”

At the risk of providing TMI, and scaring our readership, I just to say that I think plane spotting is a perfectly interesting way to spend a day. A lot of great apps for it, too.

Good on the MPAA for their excellent grammar and hilarious euphemism.

“The Imitation Game” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Illicit sex, cataclysmic violence and advanced math, most of it mentioned rather than shown. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/28/movies/the-imitation-game-stars-benedict-cumberbatch.html?_r=1

(Sadly, not the actual MPAA rating justification.)
